Characteristic radiographic findings that can be seen in the spine in patients with SCD

Vertebral bodies can have a characteristic “Lincoln log” or H-shaped appearance owing to epiphyseal infarction from sickled cells causing endplate collapse. A second radiographic abnormality that may be observed is a central cup-like indentation (“codfish vertebrae”) owing to osteoporotic weakness of the vertebrae caused by marrow expansion.
