Are radial scars associated with prior surgery?
No, radial scars are not associated with prior surgery. A radial scar is a benign proliferative lesion. If it is larger than 1 cm, it is called a complex sclerosing lesion. The classic appearance of a radial scar is that of an area of architectural distortion with central lucency. If a radial scar is seen on a core needle biopsy, excisional biopsy is recommended for further evaluation, because it can be difficult to exclude presence of breast carcinoma on the core biopsy results alone.
