Tacrine

What is Tacrine

Tacrine hydrochloride is a cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitor.

It was the first drug approved for improving cognitive symptoms (i.e., memory, attention, reason, language, and the ability to perform simple tasks) associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

A recent meta-analysis of 12 trials involving 1984 patients treated with tacrine for up to 1 year showed that tacrine reduces deterioration in cognitive performance in the first 3 months of therapy as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Clinical Global Impression of Change (CGIC) scales.
