What is Rubidium Rb 82 Chloride
Rubidium Rb 82 chloride is a radioactive diagnostic agent used for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the myocardium under rest or pharmacologic stress to evaluate regional myocardial perfusion in adults with suspected or known coronary artery disease.
The physical half-life of Rb 82 is 75 seconds; therefore, the radionuclide is obtained using a rubidium Rb 82 generator.
The generator must be used with an appropriate, properly calibrated elution system. The elution system requires adherence to a stringent quality control testing protocol.
Failure to follow the testing protocol or use of the generator beyond any of the expiration limits may result in exposure to excessive levels of strontium (Sr) 82 and Sr 85.
Rubidium Rb 82 chloride was FDA-approved in 1989
Indications
- positron emission tomography (PET) imaging
For use during positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the myocardium under rest or pharmacologic stress conditions to evaluate regional myocardial perfusion in adults with suspected or existing coronary artery disease
Side Effects
During clinical trials, some recipients of rubidium Rb 82 were unintentionally exposed to strontium (Sr) 82 and Sr 85 radiation.
Unintended radiation exposure occurred at sites where generator eluate testing appeared insufficient.
To minimize the risk of unintended radiation exposure, adhere strictly to a daily eluate testing protocol, and discontinue use of the rubidium generator when expiration limits are reached.
Contraindications
- accidental exposure
- breast-feeding
- geriatric
- heart failure
- pregnancy
- requires a specialized care setting
- ventricular dysfunction
