Nonoxynol 9 Brand Name– GYNOL II
What is Nonoxynol 9
Nonoxynol 9 is a nonionic detergent that is used as a topical contraceptive agent.
Nonoxynol 9 has spermicidal activity and is used as the sole method of contraception or in conjunction with a cervical cap, diaphragm, or condom.
These barrier methods are generally less effective than oral contraceptives in preventing pregnancy.
Nonoxynol 9 products exhibit 9% (or higher) user failure rates versus 1% failure rates for oral contraceptives.
Disappointingly, nonoxynol-9 does not decrease the risk of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), according to reports from multiple clinical trials and the CDC in 2000.
While early data indicated that this spermicide might be useful as a microbicide to prevent the transmission of several common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and resulting reproductive complications of those diseases, recent controlled data (2002) indicate that nonoxynol 9 does not sufficiently protect against the transmission of any STD, including gonorrhea or chlamydia in vivo
