What is Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is an oral and rectal lubricant laxative. The drug is also formulated as a topical oil, to be administered externally to dry and itchy skin.

Mineral Oil, USP is formed from purified distillates from petroleum products according to standards of the United States Pharmacopeia. Mineral oil retards colonic absorption of fecal water and softens the stool.

This is the only laxative recommended for fecal impaction.

Mineral oil, USP was initially marketed for use before 1962, which is when Congress passed the amended Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requiring that the FDA establish both safety and efficacy for all subsequently approved drugs.

Mineral oil is an unapproved marketed drug that has not been formally evaluated for safety and efficacy by the FDA.
