Lovastatin Niacin

Lovastatin Niacin Brand Name– Advicor

What is Lovastatin Niacin

Lovastatin niacin (Advicor™) is the first combination oral antilipemic agent introduced to the US market.

Advicor™ contains niacin (extended-release) and lovastatin (immediate-release). Lovastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, while niacin (nicotinic acid) is a B-complex vitamin.

Due to the individual actions of lovastatin and niacin, Advicor™ reduces LDL-cholesterol (30—42%) and triglycerides (32—44%), and increases HDL-cholesterol (20—30%).

The antilipemic effects of Advicor™ are dose-dependent and exceed the results attained by equivalent monotherapy doses of either niacin or lovastatin.

Advicor™ is not intended for first-line therapy. It is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia in patients receiving lovastatin or niacin and who require further TG-lowering and/or HDL-raising.

Advicor™ was approved by the FDA on December 17, 2001.
