What is Lactitol
Lactitol is an oral osmotic laxative that is a simple monosaccharide sugar alcohol. Like similar osmotic laxatives, it is minimally absorbed systemically.
Lactitol is indicated for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. In a clinical trial with lactitol, significantly more patients responded to treatment compared to placebo (25% vs. 13%, 95% CI: 6% to 18.5%).
Responders were defined as those patients who had at least 3 complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBM) in a given week and an increase of at least 1 CSBM from baseline in the same week for at least 9 weeks out of the first 12-week treatment period and the improvement occurred at least 3 of the last 4 weeks.
The drug received FDA approval in February 2020.
