Eribulin Brand Name– Halaven
What is Eribulin
Eribulin mesylate is a non-taxane, microtubule dynamics inhibitor with a distinct mechanism of action from other classes of tubulin-targeted agents such as the taxanes, vinca alkaloids, and epothilones.
It is a synthetic analogue of halichondrin B, a product isolated from the rare marine sponge Halichondria okadai. In a multicenter, randomized, comparative trial, eribulin was shown to significantly extend overall survival (OS) in previously treated metastatic breast cancer patients compared to other single agent therapeutic options.
Additionally, the median OS time was significantly improved with eribulin compared with dacarbazine in a subgroup of patients with previously treated, unresectable, advanced liposarcoma (n = 143) in a multinational, randomized, phase III trial.
In November 2010, eribulin mesylate received FDA approval for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer in patients who have previously received at least 2 chemotherapeutic regimens.
In January 2016, it was approved by the FDA for the treatment of unresectable or metastatic liposarcoma in patients who have received a prior anthracycline-containing regimen.
