Ciprofloxacin Dexamethasone Brand Name– Ciprodex Otic
What is Ciprofloxacin Dexamethasone
Ciprofloxacin dexamethasone otic suspension is used for the topical treatment of selected ear infections.
The combination is useful for middle ear infections (acute otitis media, AOM) due to susceptible organisms (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus) in children with tympanostomy tubes aged 6 months and older.
The combination is also used for the topical treatment of acute otitis externa (AOE) (e.g., swimmer’s ear) in pediatric, adult, and elderly patients.
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with in vitro activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms; topical use in the ear is not associated with ototoxicity.
Dexamethasone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid and is included to aid in the resolution of the inflammatory response associated with the bacterial infection.
The FDA approved ciprofloxacin;dexamethasone otic suspension (Ciprodex® Otic) on July 18, 2003.
