Gingivitis

What is Gingivitis

Gingivitis is redness, soreness, and swelling (inflammation) of the gums. It is caused by germs (plaque) that build up on the teeth and gums.

This happens because of poor care and cleaning of the mouth and teeth (oral hygiene). This condition is usually mild and clears up with treatment and proper cleaning of the teeth.

Follow these instructions at home:

Follow instructions from your dentist about how to clean your teeth. Make sure you:

  • Brush your teeth two times per day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss at least one time per day. Do this before you brush your teeth.
  • Use a mouthwash as told by your dentist.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Between meals, limit your intake of foods and drinks that have sugar in them.
  • See a dentist on a regular basis for cleaning and checkups.
  • Do notuse tobacco products. These include cigarettes, chewing tobacco, or e-cigarettes. If you need help quitting, ask your doctor.
  • Keep all follow-up visits as told by your dentist. This is important.

Contact a doctor if:

  • You have a fever.
  • You have a lot of bleeding from your gums.
  • You have pain in your gums or teeth.
  • You have trouble chewing.
  • You have any loose or infected teeth.
  • You have swollen glands in your face or neck.
