Who generally develops Fibromyalgia and at what age?
The prevalence of FM in the general adult US population is probably 3% to 6%. Females account for 70% to 90% of patients. The average age of onset is approximately 30 to 55 years, but ranges from childhood to the elderly. FM is more common following trauma, infections, and among patients with inflammatory arthritis.
Pearl : FM symptoms occurring for the first time in a patient older than 55 to 60 years are usually due to a disease other than FM (e.g., infection, neoplasia, and arthritis).
