Posterior fossa syndrome (cerebellar mutism) is a unique postoperative complication that is produced by damage to the cerebellar vermis or dentate nuclei. Impaired language production as well as emotional lability is seen a few days following surgery.
Symptoms often resolve over the course of weeks to months but some patients may not completely recover language skills.
