What kinds of traumatic injuries occur in the urethra?
Classification systems are available to categorize urethral injuries, but the most important assessment is to decide whether the injury is above the level of the external sphincter and membranous urethra or below the level of the external sphincter. Posterior urethral injuries, which are above the external sphincter, may lead to incontinence. Injuries below the external sphincter do not affect continence. As mentioned above, straddle injuries can cause injury to the bulbar urethra.
