What is glutamate

What is glutamate and how is it synthesized and metabolized?

Glutamate is the principal excitatory neurotransmitter of the CNS.

It is formed by transamination of α-ketoglutarate and from glutamine by glutaminase.

Metabolism involves reuptake and recycling by excitatory amino acid transporters (EAAT) expressed on neurons/glia and vesicular glutamate transporters on neurons.
