Common Features among Neurotransmitters
Certain Features are common among most all Neurotransmitters
- Presence of the substance within neuron terminals
- Release of the substance with neuronal stimulation
- Exogenous application of the substance at physiologic concentrations to the postsynaptic membrane reproduces the effects of stimulation of the presynaptic neuron.
- A local mechanism exists for inactivation of the substance (e.g., enzymatic degradation, uptake into nerve terminals or glia).
