What conditions cause sequestration into a third space?
A third space is a space that is not in equilibrium with the ECF space. The following conditions can cause sequestration of fluid into a third space.
• Crush injuries. ECF is sequestered into the damaged skeletal muscle.
• Severe pancreatitis. ECF is sequestered into the inflamed pancreas.
• Intestinal obstruction. ECF is sequestered in the intestinal lumen.
• Skeletal fractures. A large amount of blood may be sequestered in adjacent tissues.
