What characterizes an autoinflammatory syndrome?
• Involvement of the innate immune system; IL-1β is one of the most studied inflammatory cytokines in these illnesses, but not necessarily causative in all cases.
• Recurrent (not necessarily periodic) bouts of antigen-independent systemic inflammation.
• Predictable periodic fever syndromes represent a subset of these disorders (not all conditions are associated with fever).
• Absence of infection or autoimmunity (no autoantibodies).
