Symptoms of suprascapular nerve entrapment
The suprascapular nerve innervates the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. The nerve can become compressed in the suprascapular notch usually from carrying heavy loads on the shoulder. Patients have weakness on abduction and external rotation of the shoulder. Atrophy of the supraspinatus muscle can occur. Electromyography can confirm the diagnosis. Physical therapy, local corticosteroid injection, or surgical decompression can be helpful.
