purpose of image manipulation

What is the purpose of image manipulation?

Image manipulation is used to interactively change visual renditions of objects of interest in an image dataset to enhance one’s understanding about such objects. For example, one may simulate performance of a surgical procedure on a patient using an image dataset acquired from the patient or may use image datasets from multiple patients to develop new interventional techniques to treat various disease conditions.
