What is pseudoprogression?
MRI may reveal an increase in contrast enhancement during the first few months after chemoradiation treatment.
However, this imaging change may be due to treatment-related inflammation, postsurgical changes, ischemia, subacute radiation effects, or radiation necrosis and may not be because of tumor progression.
Caution must be taken following chemoradiation treatment not to conclude that the tumor has progressed and treatment has failed, unless the new enhancement is outside of the previously radiated area.
