What is platelet rich plasma injection, and why is it used?
PRP injection is a developing therapy for the treatment of tendon injuries. PRP is defined as a platelet concentration higher than that of healthy whole blood (typically five times that of whole blood). Platelets initiate the clotting cascade, and it is thought that increasing the platelet concentration at the site of an injury results in a higher concentration of growth factors, which then accelerates the healing process. After PRP is obtained via centrifugation, it is injected at the site of tendon injury under US guidance to promote healing.
