Restraints used in a health care setting can be physical restraints or medicines. This handout will focus on the use of physical restraints. Instances may arise in which physical restraints may need to be considered. Some examples of physical restraints include:

  • Vest or wrist restraints.
  • Geriatric chairs.
  • Side rails on beds.
  • Mitts.

Why are physical restraints used in health care?

Physical restraints are designed to restrict movement. They are used in health care settings to prevent injury and to protect you.

What guidelines are followed when restraints are used?

  • Physical restraints will be used only as needed and only after a careful review and assessment of your situation.
  • The decision to use a restraint and the length of time for such a restraint will be made by you, your family, and the relevant health care providers. Restraints may be used in an emergency without your permission if:
    • You are at significant risk of hurting yourself.
    • You are at significant risk of hurting others.
  • The least restrictive device necessary will be used on you. The proper size and type of restraint will be used.
  • The restraint order will be reviewed regularly to determine if safer alternatives are available.
  • You will be checked often. The restraining device may be removed regularly. A restrained limb will be exercised regularly. If possible, you should move the restrained limb from time to time. Tell the health care provider of your needs, including:
    • Nutrition.
    • Toileting.
    • Comfort.
  • Your family members will be educated about restraint use and other behavior management strategies.
  • You and your family members should ask any questions you have about restraint use and alternative behavior management strategies.
