NAFLD can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in approximately 10% of patients, which is a histologic diagnosis based on steatosis and inflammation along with variable amounts of fibrosis. NASH, which can be reversible in early stages by dietary modification, exercise, and/or weight-reduction surgeries, is the leading cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis (occurring in up to one third of patients).
