What is the natural history of Thin basement membrane nephropathy?
In the majority of patients, Thin basement membrane nephropathy is a benign condition in which progressive kidney failure does not occur.
Rarely, patients may develop more significant kidney disease.
For this reason, it is recommended that patients with persistent microscopic hematuria due to suspected Thin basement membrane nephropathy have yearly follow-up with plans for diagnostic kidney biopsy if they develop proteinuria greater than 1 g/day and/or impairment in kidney function.
The biopsy is to confirm the diagnosis of Thin basement membrane nephropathy and rule out other conditions, such as Alport syndrome and immunoglobulin-A nephropathy.
