What is meant by the term motor unit? 

Motor unit is one motor nerve (lower motor neuron) and all muscle fibers that it innervates.

A motor unit consists of a motor neuron, its single axon, the associated neuromuscular junctions and terminal axon branches, and the many muscle fibers that they supply.

All muscle fibers belonging to a single motor unit are of the same histochemical and physiologic type.
