Markers of diabetic kidney disease

Are there any markers of diabetic kidney disease?

Urinary ACR is the traditional biomarker tested when screening for diabetic kidney disease.

However, novel biomarkers are being studied to aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of diabetic kidney disease.

Inflammatory markers such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, markers of tubular injury and glomerular damage, markers of endothelial dysfunction, and urinary and plasma microRNAs are all possible future tests of kidney function.

Panels of multiple biomarkers are also being investigated to help diagnose early diabetic kidney disease, as well as assess for the risk of progression.
