What are the general therapeutic interventions in the management of hypercalcemia?
In symptomatic patients, general measures that facilitate urinary calcium excretion include administration of intravenous saline, followed by furosemide once volume expansion has been achieved. Loop diuretics are calciuric and help prevent pulmonary congestion. Patients with impaired kidney function who are unable to excrete the sodium load may require hemodialysis against a low calcium bath.
