What are the two major types of esophageal cancers?
Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus is associated with tobacco use and alcohol use and usually arises within the upper or middle thirds of the esophagus. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is associated with Barrett’s esophagus (replacement of normal esophageal squamous epithelium by metaplastic columnar epithelium) and usually arises within the lower or middle thirds of the esophagus or at the gastroesophageal junction.
