Nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) autonomic transmitters
These can act as either cotransmitters in both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems or as presynaptic or postsynaptic modulators of release and action of the major neurotransmitters.
Examples of Nonadrenergic noncholinergic neurotransmitters include
- neuropeptides such as substance P,
- neuropeptide Y,
- calcitonin gene-related peptide,
- somatostatin,
- vasoactive intestinal peptide;
- adenosine triphosphate and other nucleotides;
- serotonin; and
- nitric oxide
