Is renal cell carcinoma more frequent with ADPKD
Is renal cell carcinoma (RCC) more frequent in patients with ADPKD than in the general population?
No, the incidence of RCC is similar in ADPKD compared with the general population.
However, patients with ADPKD may develop RCC at an earlier age and have an increased risk for developing sarcomatoid, bilateral, multicentric, and metastatic tumors. MRI and contrast-enhanced CT can be useful in the diagnosis.
RCC appears on MRI as solid masses and may present restricted diffusion. On CT, speckled calcifications and contrast enhancement are highly suspicious for RCC. Thrombosis and lymphadenopathy can be seen in rare cases of RCC. Because of the multiple cysts, some necrotic or cystic RCC can be difficult to detect.
