Is antibiotic prophylaxis needed before administration of a barium enema?
There is conflicting evidence regarding bacteremia during barium enema examination. Routine antibiotic prophylaxis is probably unnecessary except in susceptible patients with cardiac lesions who have a history of endocarditis or a prosthetic valve.
