The most common indication for a monoarticular joint aspiration is to exclude the presence of infection or septic joint. Joint aspiration may also be performed for suspected crystal disease to differentiate among inflammatory conditions such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease.
