Incidence of prosthetic joint infections

What is the incidence of prosthetic joint infections? What are the risk factors?

The overall infection rate in primary total joint replacement is approximately 1% to 2% (lifetime). Risk factors include distant site of infection, impaired host defense, RA, diabetes mellitus, revision arthroplasty (5–10 times increased risk), increased operative time, and superficial joint replacements (i.e., knee, elbow, ankle).
