What is Hyponatremia

Hyponatremia is when the amount of salt (sodium) in your blood is too low. When salt levels are low, your cells absorb extra water and they swell. The swelling happens throughout the body, but it mostly affects the brain.

Follow these instructions at home:

  • Take medicines only as told by your doctor. Many medicines can make this condition worse. Talk with your doctor about any medicines that you are currently taking.
  • Carefully follow a recommended diet as told by your doctor.
  • Carefully follow instructions from your doctor about fluid restrictions.
  • Keep all follow-up visits as told by your doctor. This is important.
  • Do not drink alcohol.

Contact a doctor if:

  • You feel sicker to your stomach (nauseous).
  • You feel more confused.
  • You feel more tired (fatigued).
  • Your headache gets worse.
  • You feel weaker.
  • Your symptoms go away and then they come back.
  • You have trouble following the diet instructions.

Get help right away if:

  • You start to twitch and shake (have a seizure).
  • You pass out (faint).
  • You keep having watery poop (diarrhea).
  • You keep throwing up (vomiting).
