How useful is cerebrospinal fluid to diagnose Multiple Sclerosis?
Immunoglobulins are increased in the central nervous system in patients with Multiple Sclerosis.
When the immunoglobulin G (IgG) is examined by electrophoresis, it may concentrate into specific bands.
The finding of multiple bands in the IgG region, called oligoclonal bands , is reasonably sensitive and specific for Multiple Sclerosis.
However, it remains unclear how or why oligoclonal bands are produced or exactly what they represent.
