How to tell if a cane or crutch has been properly fitted to the patient?

A properly fitted cane or crutch should reach 8 inches lateral to the front of the foot when the patient is standing and holding the cane or crutch handle with the elbow flexed 15 to 30 degrees. This position permits stability on standing and an easy reach to the ground ahead during walking. A quicker but less precise way is to make sure the handle of the cane reaches the wrist crease when the patient is standing upright with their arms hanging down and the cane by the side of their leg.
