How many EEGs are needed to establish the diagnosis of epilepsy
Between 29% and 69% of patients with the clinical diagnosis of epilepsy have interictal epileptiform activity on a single EEG.
A greater number of EEGs increase the yield of diagnosis, with four EEGs enhancing the yield up to 92%.
More EEGs than that have minimal additional yield. The diagnostic yield of EEG also may be increased by recording sleep and prolonging monitoring.
