How is Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy treated

What pharmacologic treatment is available for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy?

Steroids are currently the only medication that has been proven to be beneficial for patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.

Treatment can improve muscle strength, prolong the ability to walk, and may improve cardiac function.

Regimens include prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/day, prednisone 5 mg/kg on Friday or Saturday (less weight gain and fewer behavioral side effects but fewer data of effectiveness) or deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/day (not available in the United States, associated with less weight gain).
