How is carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed on Ultrasound?
There are a variety of ways to evaluate for carpal tunnel syndrome with US. One of the most accurate methods is to calculate the difference between the cross-sectional area of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel and at the level of the pronator quadratus muscle. The most accurate diagnostic discrimination is achieved by using a change in cross-sectional area threshold of 2 mm, which has been reported to result in a sensitivity of 99% and specificity of 100% for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.
