How are parasomnias treated?
Generally, treatment involves ensuring the safety of the patient during the parasomnia as well as avoiding insufficient sleep.
Sleep deprivation can cause the events to become more frequent.
Caregivers should receive counseling to allow the parasomnia to occur without intervention.
Abrupt interruptions of the parasomnia may prolong the episode. In addition, comorbid conditions such as sleep-disordered breathing, periodic limb movement disorder, and restless leg symptoms may contribute to developing chronic parasomnias.
