How are antiphospholipid antibodies related to neurologic disease

How are antiphospholipid antibodies related to neurologic disease?

Antibodies directed against phospholipids are associated with thrombotic states and are found with a high frequency in patients with retinal vascular thrombosis, amaurosis fugax, ischemic optic neuropathy, and stroke in young patients.

The most common antibodies, lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibody, probably induce thrombosis via multiple mechanisms.

The presence of these antibodies has also been associated with migraine, chorea, myelopathy, and orthostatic hypotension.

Nonneurologic features may include miscarriage, livedo reticularis, and pulmonary hypertension. The pathophysiology of these symptoms is poorly understood.
