Does gout impact comorbidity or survival? What is the prognosis of Gout
Patients with gout have reduced survival compared with individuals without gout; this appears to be driven by a disproportionate burden of comorbid medical conditions. Gout patients suffer disproportionately from the effects of metabolic syndrome and more frequently have hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease (CKD), nephrolithiasis, and diabetes. Therefore, in addition to a good history and physical examination, appropriate laboratory evaluation may include a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid profile, and urinalysis.
