Do kidney stones cause damage and lead to Chronic Kidney Disease?
Cystine and struvite stones have long been recognized as causing kidney damage and even loss of a kidney.
These stones can form large staghorn calculi and recur frequently, which leads to kidney damage.
Patients with kidney stones do have slightly lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) than a healthy population.
Whether the Chronic Kidney Disease is a result of recurrent surgical procedures, lithotripsy, or intermittent obstruction during stone passage is not known.
