Distribution of colonic diverticula
In patients with diverticulosis, diverticula are found in the sigmoid colon in 90% of patients, in the descending colon in 30%, and throughout the colon in 26%. Isolated right-sided diverticula, although uncommon in the United States (about 4% of patients), are common in Japan. Appendiceal diverticula are found in 0.2% to 2% of patients.
