  • • Obesity: weight loss can improve hyperuricemia.
  • • Alcohol abuse.
  • • Renal insufficiency.

Other medical conditions associated with hyperuricemia and gout:

  • • Selected drugs.
  • • Hypothyroidism.
  • • Lead toxicity (look for other signs/symptoms such as renal failure, cognitive impairment, neuropathy, anemia, among others).
  • • Myeloproliferative disease, lymphoproliferative diseases, hemolytic anemias, polycythemia vera, sickle cell disease.
  • • Hyperparathyroidism, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetes insipidus, Bartter’s syndrome.
  • • Autosomal dominant medullary cystic kidney disease, lead nephropathy, familial juvenile hyperuricemic nephropathy.
