Difference between a double J ureteral stent and a nephroureteral stent
All ureteral stents are made of polyurethane or silicone; metallic stents are not used in ureters. A double-J ureteral stent is completely internal and has a “pigtail” at each end. Its proximal coil is situated in the renal pelvis, and its distal coil is situated in the urinary bladder. A nephroureteral stent has a “pigtail” at its distal end that is placed in the bladder and another one that is looped in the renal pelvis. The catheter exits through the skin at the percutaneous access site.
