Descending pain inhibitory system
From the prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and other limbic structures, inhibitory outflow descends to the thalamus and periaqueductal gray to the reticular region of the pons and medulla.
From the brain stem nuclei, projections head to the spinal cord.
