Dangerous neurologic complications of hypothyroidism

What are the most dangerous neurologic complications of hypothyroidism?

Although myxedema coma develops in only 1% of hypothyroid patients, its often rapid onset with associated bradycardia, ventricular arrhythmias, hypotension, hypopnea, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, electrolyte disturbance, and seizures makes it life threatening.

Treatment is supportive, with correction of metabolic abnormalities, rewarming, ventilatory and/or cardiovascular support, and adequate replacement of thyroxine and corticosteroids.

In utero and in the newborn period, undiagnosed and untreated hypothyroidism leads to cretinism.

Treatment requires early screening prior to the onset of symptoms and thyroid hormone replacement before permanent damage occurs.
