  • stroke include atrial fibrillation or flutter,
  • mechanical valves,
  • septic emboli,
  • and marantic endocarditis.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is prevalent and is not considered a likely cardioembolic source unless left-to-right shunting and a venous clot can be demonstrated.
