What cardiac conditions are considered sources of cardioembolic stroke?
Cardiac conditions associated with
- stroke include atrial fibrillation or flutter,
- mechanical valves,
- septic emboli,
- and marantic endocarditis.
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is prevalent and is not considered a likely cardioembolic source unless left-to-right shunting and a venous clot can be demonstrated.
